talkstowolves: (firebird belongs to the holy)

Thanks to [personal profile] jolantru, I discovered tonight that Crossed Genres is in the midst of voting for their flash fiction competition. Being a fan of "fantasy and science fiction with a twist," I couldn't help immediately kicking back and checking out the ten finalists.

I'm more than glad I did: there are a couple of emotional and several amusing pieces here. I hope you'll go and discover them for yourself! And, as I don't want to affect your voting, I'll put my commentary on several of the stories behind a cut.

"Father's Daughter" immediately stood out to me: it was so subtle and so slow at first, only to leave you feeling a bit gut-punched and throat-choked at the end.

The next impressive one was "Promise": the author's description of the olive grove was simply divine and I appreciate that it was unadorned science fiction.

"Primogeniture" was also a heavy-hitter: atmospheric horror at its creepiest.

"Go-Green Grass" was half sardonic lift of the lips, half titter out loud.

"The Greatest Show in the Galaxy" is notable for being an elegant science fiction inspiring a human being to look at something he took entirely for granted with fresh eyes.

"A Requiem for Angels" also had wonderfully evocative descriptive language with bonus angel-love and Watchmen-esque villainous reveal.

"Grand-Monster" was another one of the absolute best pieces featured: building, atmospheric horror one step to the left of all too mundane instances of grim life.

The others weren't bad, but didn't stand out or stick with me.

P.S. Voting is open until 11:59 PM US Eastern Standard Time on Tuesday, June 30th. Don't forget to vote if you check it out!
