In this day of technological advancement across the board, people are both closer and further away from each other than ever before. I'd like to focus on how a new dimension of the author-reader relationship is opened up through the author's use of an online presence. I'm delighted to find writers (especially some of my favorites) jumping on the bandwagon and getting internet savvy.

Neil Gaiman (Sandman, Good Omens, adapted Princess Mononoke) is decidedly ahead of the bunch. He has an active blog, giving fan's an insight into his life and mind through the practice of online journaling. It's not a real journal, seeing as how it's read by thousands and he's directly talking to us, but it's quite titillating to read his entries.

Charles de Lint also has a pleasing web presence. His site does not delve overly much into the personal but contains a wealth of information in regards to his books. The true treasure is on his mailing list, where he sends out personal notes to his readership: mostly about appearances and signings, but sometimes just about the weather.

I have a love-hate relationship with Tara K. Harper's online life. She's one of my favorite authors and has a wonderfully involved website, replete with essays, quotes, and personal thoughts on everything. The only problem is the lack of consistent updates. A taste of her beautiful mind and then withdrawal! Alas!

Endicott Studio, a collection of the finest writers and folklorists, is just one of the most beautiful things on the internet. They are my people.

Finally, I'd like to point out one of my favorite artists that I've encountered online: Stephanie Pui-Mun Law. She is amazingly talented, has done much work lately with CCGs (Warlord, Legend of the Five Rings, Magic: The Gathering). I am blessed to have this work of hers hanging over my bed. A reproduction, of course, but a signed one, given to me by a dear friend, and dripping with myth and magic.

Cheers.
