talkstowolves: (all the poets know)

"e" by Alex MyersLast year, I participated in a marvelous exercise in interstitiality: an auction of remarkable jewelry inspired by stories collected in Interfictions: An Anthology of Interstitial Writings. Through the alchemy of word and imagination and raw materials, Mia crafted evocative poem-pendants, Elizabeth Genco knotted intoxicating skeins of glittering black beads, Helen Pilinovsky invoked a terror of rats in black stick pearls, and so many others conceived of and brought into the world so many shiny things. Even I found myself moving to select beads, thread wire, and execute in necklace form the tale of a girl and her lost brothers.

This fall will see the publication of Interfictions 2 and, with it, another fundraising event for the Interstitial Arts Foundation. Once more, they are putting out the call for creators to donate liminal art so that such art -- visual, aural, whatever wondrous creations fall through the cracks of easily codified existence -- can continue to be fostered. A self-fulfilling dream.

Right now, they're looking for volunteers to help run this fundraising event smoothly. They need project managers, web assistants, photographers, and more. Check out this post by Tempest Bradford (coordinator extraordinaire and excellent contributor to the maiden voyage of Interfictions) and see if you can't lend a hand. And thank you if you do!

N.B. The painting to the left is by Alex Myers and was chosen by the IAF to be the cover for Interfictions 2. It is entitled "e" and is part of his art as commodity series.

Is jewelry all that they take? If they're open to other forms of art/creativity I might donate something to auction. Where would I go to see about that? I'm sure if I were more industrious and poked around I could find something on the website you linked... I'm just tired right now.

They're still working out the system for how to acquire art from artists this year, but I bet they will be interested in textiles! I'll ask Tempest.

I tend towards plushies a lot, either animal or human, but it really depends on what strikes me about a piece. I do a lot of "inspired by" pieces. I could just as easily end up with a blanket, or hat or gloves... it's pretty wide open. But if they're interested I'd love to read the stories and see if one of them tickles that creative urge.

[livejournal.com profile] ellen_kushner says in this post (http://ellen-kushner.livejournal.com/244650.html) that they'll be looking for "wearable and portable art" so I think you're covered! :)

we are open to any kind of art and craft. I think the official position is that we want wearable and/or portable art, and textiles definitely count. As soon as we are ready to start accepting artists I'll post on my blog and poke D to blog as well :) It will be soon - possibly within a week.

Oh, my. You artist people. Your post is breathtaking, and totally kicks mine's butt. Thank you, thank you!

That was a beautiful necklace you made last year. I can't wait to see what you do next!

Gosh, I'm blushing. Thank you! I'm just really keen on the interstitial arts.

And your post was very good -- more informative than mine, I think.

This looks neat. Sorry to say I don't have any of the requisite skills, or I'd volunteer. But good luck to all involved!

Wait - I heard that! You can't get away so easy. We need *tons* of volunteers with *lots* of varied & various skills! See here:

http://www.interstitialarts.org/wordpress/?page_id=9

So . . . .what do you like to do, my dear?

Ooh, there's plenty that I *like* to do, but I'm honestly unsure if I'm skilled enough in any one area to contribute in a significant manner. I'm a student right now taking a load of courses in art (going back to school to get a degree in interior design), so I have pretensions toward art in general. My pretensions also include writing, editing, and fiddling about with general web geekery (Twitter, Facebook, web design/blogging, etc.) To steal a phrase from my fiance, I'm a hack of all trades. :)

I am interested, however, so if there's room for a hack with a currently uncertain schedule, I'd be glad to climb aboard. If not, the good luck wishes remain, regardless.

By the way: I used to listen to "Sound & Spirit" and loved it. Don't suppose you still do that...?

Only now did the thought occur to me that you might have been asking which sorts of jobs appealed to me. If that's the case: wow, did I really drop the ball on that one. Normally I'm a bit quicker on the uptake than that.

I'm still not sure what would be a good fit (other than anything that necessarily involves not being physically present to contribute), but I did wander the website more and I have to say that I really love the premise. I've been half in love with all that's liminal nearly all my life, but only began to understand that the past 5 or 6 years. This is my way of saying I'd be rather enthused to help out anywhere, really.

No, no, you understood me perfectly the first time. More soon on all this, but didn't want you to worry. It means a lot that IAF resonates with you! The perfect place to begin.

Thanks for mentioning "Sound & Spirit." I"m not making new shows currently, but it continues to air on some stations weekly, and over 100 shows are available at the website:

Thank you so much for the link! I remember listening to an episode that explored the Kalevala and being fascinated. Now I can enjoy it and others again.

I hope you don't mind if I friend your journal, at least so I'm not impinging on [livejournal.com profile] talkstowolves's journal entry anymore. :)

Thank you! Yeah, I loved that Kalevala show a lot - and it's actually Part 1 of 2 we did - I think the other is called "Out of Finland" and has tons of joikking. Enjoy.

I'm delighted you're friending my journal. All are welcome.

Oh my... I never realized that you hosted Sound & Spirit! I wasn't a regular listener, but I remember stumbling across "Surviving Survival" many years ago. I was in a very dark place at that time and listening to that program was part of the impetus that got me into counseling and allowed me to purge several demons.

What a connected world. And thank you, Ellen, for once helping to provide me with a guiding voice in the darkness.

That show meant a great deal to me - esp. "Surviving Survival," which I waited years until I felt I had the right material to produce. It is very good to know it meant something to you, and came at the right time. I hear lots of stories like this. There is real magic to radio.
